Mineral(s): Amethyst
Location: La Manche Mine Property, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada
Size: 7.3 x 4.1 x 5.2 cm
Provenance: B&R Minerals
Description: This specimen features lustrous, deep purple crystals of amethyst with hematite inclusions. The crystals are ‘zoned’ and the crystal faces are projecting from a central point. The specimen has no matrix, a small saw cut at the base and is in great condition with only a small bruise on the left side that is not noticeable from the front. These specimens from the La Manche mine are difficult to find, especially with such a deep purple colour.
The La Manche mine was originally discovered in 1855 and began operations in 1857. Production totaled approximately 3500 tons of galena. The mine closed in 1887, however recent prospecting on the property led to the discovery of the new amethyst vein.
