Description: An impressive translucent single point crystal of purple amethyst with hematite inclusions in the termination. The crystal is lustrous with micro- chips (not noticeable) on the termination. Interesting crystal growth rings on the back of the crystal. Old specimen from a private collection.
This is a fine display quality example of this classic mineral. The Thunder Bay District of Ontario is world famous for its distinctive amethyst crystals with several open pit mines operating for gem and mineral specimen material. Thunder Bay amethyst has been known since the 19th century and is remarkable for its colour variety – all shades of purple from pale to deep.
